26 AGO21- QUITO, Guayaquil and Cuenca- (AP) - 'At the request from the US Ecuador has agreed to temporarily accept 5000 Afghan refugees. The US will foot the bill.-✈️ "Ecuador will receive some 5,000 Afghans following a request from the United States government, which will cover the expenses required for the foreigners' stay.
The Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela, told the digital portal of the newspaper El Comercio on Thursday that it is a humanitarian reception "of people of Afghan nationality fleeing the dictatorial government that is being installed in Afghanistan and that they are fleeing fundamentally because they have doubts that their rights can be guaranteed by the Taliban government ”.
She clarified that the request to receive these people "has been raised by the United States government for a temporary humanitarian reception."
Foreigners, she added, will arrive in the South American country as protected by international treaties.
She stressed that the permanence of the foreigners will not represent any expense for the Ecuadorian State "because their stay and the expenses that it implies will be assumed by the United States government."
She added that Ecuador has expressed its full acceptance and support for the protection "especially of girls, adolescents and women whose rights would obviously not be respected at all under the new regime."
The date of arrival and the cities where they will be located are not known, although a group of ministries prepare shelter homes in the country's largest cities such as Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca.
