• "The Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health already has a tentative date to start with the application of a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine: May 2022.

The minister of the branch, Ximena Garzón, indicated this Wednesday, February 23, that the proposal for a fourth booster dose is under analysis.

"We are planning to give the fourth dose, if necessary, but possibly it will be," Garzón said in an interview with Ecuador TV. She indicated that in the recent meeting that she had with the White House medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, the subject was addressed.

The purpose of the Government is to give the population a booster dose every five months. The head of Health announced that people vaccinated in December would receive the vaccine again in May of this year. As on previous occasions, the first group would be those from the first line of care and older adults, she stressed.

Garzón assured that the ministry will continue to monitor the indicators epidemiologically and will decide if this is necessary or not. She mentioned that the MSP, the National Institute for Public Health Research (Inspi) and an American university will conduct a prevalence study to determine the percentage of immunity at the community level and follow up.

She added that Ecuador is in the highest places of recognition in the region for the vaccination process. In the country, the pandemic is also expected to end in the coming months.

In the world, the application of a fourth dose is already a reality. Israel and Chile are the countries that began this process with health personnel, adults over 60 years of age, and patients with weakened immune systems.

The MSP calls to get vaccinated before the holiday
Ecuador is getting ready for the Carnival holiday that will start this Saturday, February 26, and will last until Tuesday, March 1. Given this, the Ministry called on citizens to be immunized against covid-19, especially that population over 50 years of age.

They are in the vulnerable groups or at the highest risk of becoming seriously ill or dying, according to warnings from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The agency insists that the highest mortality rate is in this population group, due to comorbidities or pre-existing diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

In this sense, the MSP said that it is essential to join efforts to improve immunization in this age range. In the country, the figures show that the largest number of deceased were over 50 years old.

In the first seven weeks of 2022, which corresponds to January and February, 750 deaths have been reported. It is 92.1% of the total, according to data from the Ministry of Health, as of February 21.

As of Sunday, February 20, 13.4 million people were fully vaccinated against covid-19. That is, 83.80% of the 16 million inhabitants of the age to be vaccinated. In addition, according to the MSP, 3.7 million reinforcements have been applied."
