09JUN22- 'Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland Elected to U.N. Security Council-
"UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations General Assembly elected Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland to the U.N. Security Council on Thursday for two-year term starting on Jan. 1, 2023.

All five countries ran unopposed for a spot on the 15-member body, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security. They will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway.

To ensure geographical representation, seats are allocated to regional groups. But even if candidates are running unopposed in their group, they still need to win the support of more than two-thirds of the General Assembly.

Ecuador received 190 votes, Japan 184, Malta 185, Mozambique 192 and Switzerland 187.

The Security Council is the only U.N. body that can make legally binding decisions like imposing sanctions and authorizing use of force. It has five permanent veto-wielding members: the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia." - https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2022-06-09/ecuador-japan-malta-mozambique-switzerland-elected-to-u-n-security-council

09JUN22- 'Ecuador and 4 Other Countries Become UN Security Council Non-Permanent Members-
-They will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway at the UN Security Council.-
"On Thursday, Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland were elected non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term.

The newly elected members will take up their new responsibilities on Jan. 1, 2023, and will serve till Dec. 31, 2024. All five candidates were running unopposed on Thursday. They will replace the outgoing non-permanent members of India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway.

A candidate must obtain the support of two-thirds of the UN member states present and voting at the General Assembly session in order to secure a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, regardless of whether the candidacy is contested or not. This means that a minimum of 129 positive votes are required to win a seat if all 193 member states are present and voting. Member states that abstain are considered not voting.

In Thursday's voting, Mozambique and Ecuador won the support of all member states that were present and voting, with 192 and 190 votes respectively. Switzerland won 187 votes, Malta won 185 votes, and Japan won 184 votes, according to results announced by Abdulla Shahid, the current General Assembly president, who presided over the voting process.

MON 06OCT25 #ParoDay15#Ecuador #ParoNacional2025 #PUYO The community of Puyo, today marched against the government of Daniel Noboa. Strong repression and arrogance of the authorities is causing more and more sectors to join the National Unemployment protests. Today marks 15 days of protests." -

SUN 05OCT25 (11:03) #ParoDay14 #Quito #Ecuador Pres Noboa: "No one can come and take by force the capital of all Ecuadorians.

To those who choose violence, the law awaits them. To those who act like criminals, they will be treated as criminals.

We continue doing what is our duty: we will be in Pastaza tomorrow, together with those who truly build the country, helping those who need it most to produce more and get ahead." - (1/2)

"While some want to stop Ecuador, we propel it forward.

We will reduce the VAT to 8% during the holidays of October 9, and November 2 and 3, because this country is not going to grind to a halt because of a few who lost the business of smuggling and illegal mining.

To boost the local economy, on November 14 we will pay the thirteenth salary to public employees,

so families will have more money during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We invite the private sector to join this initiative." - (2/2)
