21JUL22- "The actor/activist Leonardo DiCaprio spoke this Thursday, July 21, through social networks about the rights of nature that could be violated by mining in the Íntag Valley. Through his publication, DiCaprio points out that the rights of nature in Íntag "are in the hands of the Imbabura Provincial Court of Justice."
"Today, both human rights and the rights of nature are in the hands of the provincial court in Ecuador as they determine the future of the Intag Valley. Local communities are asking the provincial court to rule against mining , which would damage this ecosystem," the actor wrote.
Yesterday, the hearing for the violation of the rights of nature and lack of Environmental Consultation took place in Íntag, one of the most biodiverse places in Ecuador. In addition, the activist also mentioned that "Ecuador's Intag Valley is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Home to the long-nosed harlequin toad that was once thought to be extinct, the court hearing will determine the future of this species."
Around 10:00 a.m., citizens gathered outside the Imbabura Provincial Court to press the appeal of the Protection Action in the case, which was presented by the Junín, C Chalguayaco Alto, Cerro Pelado, Barcelona communities of the Intag Valley. These communities could be the most affected by the mining project called Llurimagua, in Cotacachi Canton. It is mentioned that several endangered species residing in the Íntag Valley will lose their homes if the mining project is approved . As well as entire communities will have to be relocated." -
