Indigenous leader reports little progress in dialogue with government in Ecuador
Ecuador's government talks with the country's largest indigenous organization, initiated after violent demonstrations months ago, have made little progress, the leader of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities told AFP during a meeting of native guards this weekend.
"I think we have gained more in the 18 days" of protest "than in the 90 days at the dialogue tables" installed last July 7 after the end of the marches against the high cost of living, which left six dead and more than 600 injured, said Leonidas Iza, president of Conaie.
The most sensitive issues to be dealt with in the dialogues are subsidies, price control and mining and oil exploitation, said Iza, who is participating in the first meeting of the indigenous guard in the Amazonian community of Sinangoe, in the province of Sucumbios (bordering Colombia).
On Friday, representatives of the government of President Guillermo Lasso and the indigenous groups ended the work of the tables of productive development, price control and energy and natural resources.
"There are minimal agreements, there are more disagreements", said Iza, leaving open the possibility that the talks may be extended beyond October 12, when the agreed deadline for the dialogues ends.
Regarding the targeting of fuel subsidies, "there are favorable issues and we need more progress", he added, without specifying which are the coincidences.
For his part, the Minister of Government, Francisco Jiménez, has pointed out that "dialogue, agreements and even disagreements are proof of a democratic and peaceful State".
The violent demonstrations of last June led Lasso to reduce fuel prices by up to 8%. With this reduction, the gallon of diesel went from 1.90 to 1.75 dollars, and that of regular gasoline from 2.55 to 2.40 dollars.
The Executive also accepted an increase in an assistance bonus for low-income families, subsidies for agricultural inputs and the cancellation of debts of up to 3,000 dollars owed by peasants to public banks.
The protests, which began on June 13 and left losses of US$1 billion, were the longest in the history of the powerful Conaie, which participated in revolts that overthrew three presidents between 1997 and 2005.
When asked about new demonstrations, Iza pointed out that the indigenous movement will first analyze the agreements reached at the tables before taking a position." - https://www.rfi.fr/es/más-noticias/20220911-l%C3%ADder-ind%C3%ADgena-señala-pocos-avances-en-diálogo-con-el-gobierno-en-ecuador
