03MAR23- 🐬Ministerio del Ambiente, Agua y Transición Ecológica de EcuadorEcuador has made the decision to create the new Ecuadorian Marine Reserve made up of 8 miles along the entire coastal profile.
This initiative will make it possible to conserve the marine biodiversity that inhabits the sea. Ecuador becomes the first country in the world to declare a reserve in its coastal marine profile. The measure converts 1.5 million hectares into a marine biodiversity conservation area,
mainly for four species of marine turtles, sharks, humpback whales and more than 90% of the habitat of giant manta rays, according to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition. The decision will also ensure sustainable fishing.
"These first miles allow us to maintain the volume of responsible fishing and guarantee the feeding of millions of human beings," explained President Guillermo Lasso. To achieve this, the authorities announced coordinated work with artisanal fishermen so that their fishing modality goes hand in hand with conservation parameters.
This Reserve is added to the 7.7 million hectares of the National System of Protected Areas declared by this Government and which guarantee the effective conservation of the national natural and water heritage. They are a total of 27.5 million hectares nationwide." -🦈
