Ecuador on the verge of electrical rationing, and already with scheduled cuts in three provinces
Santos Alvite explained that for several weeks they have had a deficit in energy generation...
"we are going through the worst drought in the last 50 years," he said, adding that they have tried to make up for the missing energy by repairing the generation park, but He indicated that they have to be sincere with the country:
“The generation is not enough to cover the demand...we see the need to arrange temporary cuts in the supply of electricity in the country,” the minister announced.
The cuts will occur in the period from 07:00 to 18:00 and each electrical or distribution company will make the cuts in the way that causes the least complications for citizens.
The cuts will be temporary until a new generation enters and will be around 4 hours a day in the Sierra and the Eastern region and 3 hours a day on the Coast.
This announcement of the start of power cuts comes after an alleged internal communication from the national electricity operator (Cenace) circulated on social networks last Wednesday requesting authorization from the Ministry of Energy to proceed with rationing.
In the Cenace communication it was indicated that due to the low energy reserves stored in the reservoirs "it is necessary to begin the rationing period in the Ecuadorian electrical system, which if there are no improvements in the water contributions of the main plants, particularly the Mazar-Paute-Sopladora chain, would come into effect as of October 26.
For this, Cenace requires the endorsement of the Ministry of Energy and the application of a contingency plan.
Previously, that same day, there were several scheduled electricity outages in three provinces of the country.
The National Electricity Corporation (CNEL EP) reported on Tuesday that it would carry out maintenance work to strengthen the quality of electrical service in several points of Esmeraldas, Azuay and Santa Elena, however, the authorities assured that these scheduled cuts were not blackouts or rationing. electrical."

During President Rafael Correa’s administration between 2007 and 2017, Ecuador pivoted by severing its military relations with the US.
This comprehensive shift included ordering the closure of the security cooperation office in the US Embassy and honoring but not renewing the lease term for the Manta Air Base, causing the withdrawal of approximately 300 US military personnel stationed there.
However, this period of strained relations was followed by the re-establishment of the Office of Security Cooperation (OSC) in 2018, signaling a potential shift that ultimately materialized with new military cooperation agreements signed with the US in 2023 under President Lasso and ratified in 2024 by President Daniel Noboa. ...

"For those who opposed and doubted the need for the Solidarity and Intelligence laws : thanks to those laws, Fito was captured today and is in the hands of the Security Bloc," the president posted on the social network X.
"We have done our part to proceed with Fito's extradition to the United States , and we await your response. Have a good afternoon, Ecuador," Noboa added.
The criminal leader had been on the run for over a year and a half , after escaping from the Guayaquil Regional Prison and hiding his tracks while the country was engulfed in a spiral of violence, culminating in the brief takeover of a television station.
