07DEC23- (UN) "President Daniel Noboa was in New York today, presiding over the session of the United Nations Security Council. He said that Ecuador has been impacted by the wave of transnational crime and its links with armed groups, adding that he hopes for the help and cooperation of the international community to be able to achieve changes.
It is not common for heads of state to attend the Security Council, much less to preside over a working session, this being a task entrusted to foreign ministers in cases where a country decides to raise the level of its intervention to the maximum.
During his brief speech at the beginning of the security council, Noboa revealed that he has received death threats "almost every day" for two months. Something similar happens with the ministers of his government and his family.
He stressed that Ecuador, previously considered a peaceful country, has been suffering an unprecedented increase in violence for years, but he did not attribute it to groups with a national agenda. Rather, he said that these are transnational crime organizations, which seek to "weaken our borders to favor their routes." -
