21JAN24- A Police Report released by the national Directorate of Information Analysis of the National Police, prepared on 12 January 2024, revealed figures on insecurity rates in the country, intentional homicides and crimes against property. The report revealed 8,009 intentional homicides were committed in 2023, which is equivalent to a rate of 43.94 per 100,000 inhabitants; the highest in the history of Ecuador.
The nine-page document begins by specifying that, between 2015 and 2018, the homicide rate remained relatively low (between 6.45 and 5.85 per 100,000). But, it is from 2019 onwards that a rebound in this crime begins to be experienced as part of a growing trend, ending 2022 with 4,885 intentional homicides. This represented a rate of 27.15 per 100 thousand inhabitants.
On a national scale - between January 1 to December 31, 2023 versus 2022 - the behavior of the levels of violence of the intentional homicides indicator showed an increase in violence of 64%. That is, there was an increase of 3,124 intentional homicides compared to the same period in 2022." -
There are still several Provinces and 100s of Cantons that have had very little to no violent crime change, Choosing the correct location for your family within Ecuador is of the utmost importance.
