14FEB24- "The new Value Added Tax (IVA) rate will go from 12% to 13% once the Law to confront the internal armed conflict is promulgated by President Daniel Noboa and published in the Registro Oficial.
And, because Noboa made a partial objection to the law that the Assembly approved on February 6, 2024, the new IVA rate will begin to be collected from April 1 and not in March 2024 , as initially anticipated by the President, explains tax lawyer Napoleón Santamaria.
So what will cost more once the new IVA goes into effect?
On the other hand, there are many basic foods that have 0% IVA, so consumers will not have to pay more with the new law. These are the foods most consumed by Ecuadorians, among which are: rice, flour, oats, bread, meat, chicken, eggs, milk, sausages, tuna, cheese, oil, fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains and tubers.
Citizens will not have to pay more for basic services either, since they have a 0% IVA rate. Considered in this group are: Electricity, drinking water, sewage and garbage collection.
Cable television, Internet, and cellular and landline telephone services are not in the group of basic services, so they will have a 13% IVA rate.
Eating in restaurants and cafes will be more expensive.
Household goods and appliances will be subject to IVA at 13%. They include refrigerators, washing machines and dryers, and air conditioners.
What will happen to health and education? Medicines and health services, such as consultations with general practitioners or specialists, including prepaid medicine services and health insurance, have 0% IVA.
Laboratory tests, hospitalization expenses, dental services, and veterinary expenses for pet care also do not have IVA. Education should not increase in price due to IVA either. There is a 0% rate for: Initial basic education up to bachillerato, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate university education and daycare service.
However, computer and language courses will have a 13% IVA rate." -
