29JUL24 "A field trip by a group of students from an instituto superior in Ibarra ended in tragedy in Río Verde parish in Baños de Agua Santa Canton. Around 30 students were touring Baños Canton when two of them disappeared, swept away by the current of the river. It all happened on the afternoon of Saturday, July 27. First, the delegation visited the Agoyán hydroelectric plant and then went to the parish of Río Verde. In this sector, they took tours in the tourist centers, one of them being the Pailón del Diablo. The excursion to the waterfall went as normal, until they went to the area called La Playa.
According to a police report, a 20-year-old woman sat on the riverbank despite warnings to be careful. Moments later, the young woman was swept away by the current of the river and began to call for help. One of her companions jumped into the river with the intention of rescuing her, but was also swept away by the tributary. On Monday, the search efforts began at 08:00 with the help of firefighters from Mera and Puyo, who used drones. Rescuers from the Red Cross of Baños also joined in." UPDATE: Searchers found the body of the 20-year-old woman in the Pastaza River.' -
