27 AUG24- "A new method to drug victims with scopolamine: this time, not by spiking drinks, but by applying scopolamine to old sterling coins:
Scopolamine Incident in Quito: Woman Loses $6,000 in a New Theft Modality
The victim was drugged with scopolamine while conducting an errand in Quito's Historic Center.
What initially seemed like a "gathering of friends" ended with a report of a new robbery method in Quito involving the use of scopolamine, a drug used by criminals to disorient their victims.
According to Teleamazonas, security cameras captured the moment when two women took advantage of a person, entered her home, and stole $6,000.
The 66-year-old victim recounts that it all began when she was approached by the two suspects in the Historic Center.
The women approached her and showed her a sterling, an old English coin. After coming into contact with this item, the victim felt unwell and lost control of her actions.
They took her home
Subsequently, the two women accompanied the elderly woman to her home. Cameras captured them arriving in a taxi and entering the residence.
The suspects made the victim retrieve her bank documents, and then they went to a financial institution to withdraw the money.
Germán León, head of the Manuela Sáenz District, explained that this theft method involves profiling the victim. The criminals take advantage of individuals who are alone and approach them to commit the crime.
In this case, it is suspected that the substance was applied to a coin, which was then offered for sale to a potential victim. This allows the criminals to make contact and exploit the citizens."

During President Rafael Correa’s administration between 2007 and 2017, Ecuador pivoted by severing its military relations with the US.
This comprehensive shift included ordering the closure of the security cooperation office in the US Embassy and honoring but not renewing the lease term for the Manta Air Base, causing the withdrawal of approximately 300 US military personnel stationed there.
However, this period of strained relations was followed by the re-establishment of the Office of Security Cooperation (OSC) in 2018, signaling a potential shift that ultimately materialized with new military cooperation agreements signed with the US in 2023 under President Lasso and ratified in 2024 by President Daniel Noboa. ...
