24OCT24 #Ecuador MORE ON THE BREAKING NEWS:
"President Daniel Noboa 's offer to reduce blackout times to four hours will not be met . This Thursday , October 24, 2024, the Government reported that power outages will last 14 hours a day due to the severe drought.
Prior to the announcement, the interim Minister of Energy , Inés Manzano, indicated during an interview on Thursday that they are "doing everything possible to maintain the eight-hour blackouts," but weather conditions are constantly changing.
" It would be irresponsible to say that this will not change , of course it will change, even the radiation will change ," said the minister, while stressing that the planning for the suspension of electricity service could be modified.
GOVERNMENT BACKTRACKS
On national television, on October 17, 2024, Daniel Noboa confirmed that rationing would continue for at least three more weeks, but with progressive reductions in hours . Accompanied by Inés Manzano, the President indicated that from November 28 to 10, they would be reduced to four hours .
However, with a discouraging weather forecast for hydroelectric plants , the main sources of energy generation in the country, and despite the Government's assurances that in the coming days 300 more megawatts of power will be included in the national electrical system, the offer will not be met.
For a month now, Ecuador has been facing one of its worst energy crises amid a difficult economic and social situation , marked by violence, insecurity and unemployment.
The government says the main causes are the lack of rainfall and the lack of maintenance of energy generation sources, which have made the country dependent on hydroelectric plants, which currently operate with reservoirs below minimum levels.
As part of the immediate solutions, the Turkish barge Emre Bey was contracted , which had some operational problems at the beginning and currently produces up to
104 megawatts to the National Interconnected System (SNI) that supplies about 500,000 homes. 1,598 megawatts were also offered until April 2025 , but only 434 are operational."-

During President Rafael Correa’s administration between 2007 and 2017, Ecuador pivoted by severing its military relations with the US.
This comprehensive shift included ordering the closure of the security cooperation office in the US Embassy and honoring but not renewing the lease term for the Manta Air Base, causing the withdrawal of approximately 300 US military personnel stationed there.
However, this period of strained relations was followed by the re-establishment of the Office of Security Cooperation (OSC) in 2018, signaling a potential shift that ultimately materialized with new military cooperation agreements signed with the US in 2023 under President Lasso and ratified in 2024 by President Daniel Noboa. ...
25JUN25 "Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced this Thursday the capture of Adolfo Macías Villamar, alias "Fito ," considered the leader of the Los Choneros organized crime group.
"For those who opposed and doubted the need for the Solidarity and Intelligence laws : thanks to those laws, Fito was captured today and is in the hands of the Security Bloc," the president posted on the social network X.
"We have done our part to proceed with Fito's extradition to the United States , and we await your response. Have a good afternoon, Ecuador," Noboa added.
The criminal leader had been on the run for over a year and a half , after escaping from the Guayaquil Regional Prison and hiding his tracks while the country was engulfed in a spiral of violence, culminating in the brief takeover of a television station.
'Fito,' who was serving a 34-year sentence for organized crime, drug trafficking, and murder , escaped on January 7, 2024, as he was about to be transferred to La Roca, a ...
