06DEC24 "Ecuador's Constitutional Court has found Furukawa, a Japanese-owned company, guilty of modern slavery through serfdom on its abacá plantations for more than five decades.
The ruling requires it to pay compensation to 342 victims with a total of 41 million dollars,
in addition to publicly acknowledging its responsibility. The ruling establishes payments of 120,000 dollars per victim, with an additional 5,000 dollars for women, minors, the elderly or those who suffered amputations.
It also orders the intervention of the company by the Superintendency of Companies, prohibiting the sale of assets and shares.
The Court denounced the inhumane conditions of the camps, which lacked basic services and
perpetuated the vulnerability of workers, including children, women and mutilated people. Furukawa used contracts that concealed illegal practices, aggravating the social and human damage.
The Ecuadorian State was also held responsible for failing to prevent and protect human rights, pointing to the negligence of several ministries, such as those of Labor and Health, before 2018 and after the complaints.
Furukawa questioned the jurisdiction of the constitutional court in the case, arguing that the disputes should be resolved by civil and labour courts. However, the Court concluded that there had been a systematic violation of human dignity and rights."

25JUN25 "Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced this Thursday the capture of Adolfo Macías Villamar, alias "Fito ," considered the leader of the Los Choneros organized crime group.
"For those who opposed and doubted the need for the Solidarity and Intelligence laws : thanks to those laws, Fito was captured today and is in the hands of the Security Bloc," the president posted on the social network X.
