Ecuador is working on several solutions to face the energy crisis, which has caused blackouts from four to ten hours a day. One of them is cloud bombing. This was revealed by Roberto Luque, Minister of Energy in charge, this Friday, April 26, 2024.

Luque detailed, in an interview with Ecuavisa, that they are working with a rain stimulation program and, apparently, it is giving very good results. The Minister of Energy in charge avoided giving further details, but affirmed that it has a low cost.

“We have been stimulating clouds since Wednesday (April 24, 2024) with certain tests. I don't have the details because we are looking at how to improve. I will give the details in the future when it is prudent,” Luque said.

The announcement is made in the midst of the energy crisis, caused by the lack of rainfall and problems in the hydroelectric power plants. Therefore, it was expected that with the rains of the last days the reservoirs would increase their level and the distribution of energy would improve.

In view of this situation, several solutions have been proposed, such as barges, but now cloud bombardment, used in countries such as Mexico, Dubai or Saudi Arabia, is also being considered to mitigate the low water levels of the coming months. It was also used in Ecuador in 1992 during the government of Sixto Durán Ballén.

How cloud seeding works-
Cloud seeding is a weather manipulation with the objective of causing rain or snow. It was first employed in Massachusetts, USA, by Vincent Joseph Schaefer and his team in the 1940s.

This technique should not be applied to just any cloud, as they must select those that contain water below zero degrees Celsius. In this way, the moisture is condensed into droplets, according to National Geographic.

Moreover, the results will vary depending on the conditions. Therefore, experts emphasize that the right type of clouds and appropriate temperature and wind scenarios are required. For which meteorological studies of cloud humidity, wind speed and others are required.

Cloud seeding consists of the release of silver iodide through drones, airplanes and even rockets with the objective of creating more water droplets or the vapor condensation necessary to cause precipitation.

Manuel Mustieles Ibarra, creator of the chemical solution called 'RainMaker', detailed to Expansión Política how the silver iodide works, which when in contact with a humid environment crystallizes and encourages rain to fall.

“The airplanes are loaded with silver iodide and with a sprinkler we spray the solution to the clouds, it is like when we apply spray to the hair. It is a great advantage because there is no fire, no explosions, what we have is a completely stable, colorless and environmentally friendly liquid,” says Mustieles Ibarra."
